Plug-in units – a definition
19" plug-in units are mechanical units which serve accommodation of one or more printed circuit boards. The PCBs installed in a plug-in unit thus form a larger, closed and testable electronic functional unit. The mechanical dimensions comply with the IEC 60297-3-101 / IEEE 1101.1/11 standard, the so-called 19" standard. These functional units are installed in subracks or cases, whose dimensions are also an integral part of the IEC 60297-3-101 / IEEE 1101.1/11 standard. These specified dimensional limitations allow only for limited play for customized design. Therefore the goal is to make maximum use of the play regarding dimensions, for example
- by maximizing the interior space of a plug-in unit, thus creating as much space for the electronic components as possible, or
- by ensuring optimal EMC shielding, so as to loose as little mounting space as possible due to the shielding components.
