Outdoor cabinets offer double-wall protection

At this year’s Railtex exhibition, electronics packaging specialist Schroff displayed a variety of enclosure solutions for railway applications – most notably a range of outdoor cabinets that use a double-wall design.

As well as protecting the installed components from mechanical damage, this design provides natural convection between the inner and outer walls, thereby enabling a high level of heat to be dissipated without the need for additional cooling systems. In addition, the double walls serve to minimise the amount of heat generated in the enclosure due to solar radiation.

Featuring a robust construction capable of handling loads up to 400kg, the cabinets are available in two versions: Modular and Unibody. The Modular cabinet is based on an aluminium extrusion frame that allows good accessibility from all sides. The more economical Unibody version is based on a one-piece aluminium inner enclosure and is especially suitable for smaller-dimension wall, mast or floor mounted applications.

Both types of cabinet offer climatic protection in accordance with IEC 68-2-1, -2, and -14. In addition, they are tested to IEC 68-2-6 and 27 for stability under shock and vibration and to IEC 68-2-57 for earthquake conditions. Ingress protection (IP) level and EMC shielding can be selected according to the requirements of the individual application.

The outdoor cabinets are available with one or two doors and allow installation of 19in., ETSI or even non-standard accessories. The exterior of the cabinets is finished with a weatherproof powder coating, and, to prevent unauthorised access, there are no visible screws or mounting elements.
