NEBS (Network Equipment-Building System) is an American standard for telecommunications systems. In qualifying for NEBS, systems are tested for their capability to remain functional under extreme environmental conditions such as earthquakes, lightning strikes or fire. Schroff's AdvancedTCA systems and its customised and standard backplanes are NEBS certified and can thus be used in highly-sensitive zones worldwide.
Schroff AdvancedTCA systems are available as 16-, 14- and 5-slot plug-in units and as 2-slot development systems. The well-thought-out system cooling ensures uniform heat extraction from the installed components even in the event of the failure of a fan. In order to ensure reliable and cost-effective temperature and shelf management, the AdvancedTCA systems are equipped with two redundant shelf management controllers and fan controllers. The two functions are combined on a single board. The programmable fan controller thus allows a high degree of flexibility for matching the thermal concept to different applications. On the integrated backplanes of complete systems, various types of connection topology can be realised. Both simple solutions using Dual Star or Dual Dual Star (redundant Dual Star) and Full Mesh, in which every slot is connected to every other via one channel, are available. The backplanes meet the high-speed requirements of the next board generation, offering 3.125 Gbps and above.
To qualify for NEBS certification, the systems must undergo a series of tests. Systems are exposed to temperature fluctuations of more than 60 °C and must withstand a simulated earthquake equivalent to 8.3 on the Richter scale. In a further test they are exposed to a discharge of 15,000 Volts. Additional tests are conducted for resistance to environmental influences including lightning strikes, vibration, humidity, electromagnetic interference and corrosion.
