Carrier Colt Telecom counts on Schroff-solutions

Today the saying "Time is money" has more importance than ever. Telephone, Fax, E-mail the modern technology offers practical help, to save valuable seconds and minutes. But pay attention, because the depandancy increases, hardly any company can afford a break down of one of these communication platforms in the business process even for a short time. If it is banking, insurance, the tourist industry or manufacturing, reliable telecommunication-connections are the basic foundation for success.
Therefore the demands on the net operator increase in many aspects: Firstly they have to guarantee highest availability of technology. Secondly it has to act extremely fast and flexible to the installation demands of the customers, new connections, realise changes and expand net capacity.

Glass Fibre Net in Ring Structure

Colt Telecom operates as a specialist in this sector in Europe. The company offers exclusive desigs for customers' needs, telephone-, data-, and Internet services as highest priority. Therefore Colt Telecom relies on high power-capable fibre optic nets. Today our city-networks in Germany contain approximately 760 km laid fibre optic cable, says Siegfried Flaig, procurater director net-extension city-networks Germany at Colt Telecom. Nothing is left to chance right from the laying stage. Security pipes, which reach up into the inside of the building, as well as locked marked-out routes and climb-marked-out routes increase the security of our nets. But to guarantee our customers a net-availability of 99,99%, there is a need of a special net-architecture.

Security through and through

In Frankfurt and other German sites, Colt has decided in favour of cabinets from the PROLINE series in the NCC. In accordance with the saying ‘stable, multi-functional and cost effective’, this cabinet fits perfectly into the Colt-concept. The construction is based on a welded steel frame along with movable steel cover parts and loading capable up to 500kg. Without a few exceptions, glass fronts were chosen for the cabinets which were assembled in rows, as an aesthetic appearance played an important part, says Alwin Wurz. But we did not want to take any risk in the aspect of security, so we decided not to take the common securit-glass but the laminated glass.
With a depth of 800mm the cabinets facilitate installations from both sides for multiplex and leave enough space for cable management at the front. The PROLINE cabinet offers the special advantage, that it is not only available in 19", but also in metric versions. This is especially important in consideration to the ETSI-Telecom-Standards, that are based on the metric system. Because the ETSI-devices are wider than the 19"-technology based cabinets, they do not fit on the 19"-cabinets.

High availability needs reliable power supply

Colt Telecom assembles Schroff's eurorack cabinets at the customer site. In these cabinets are the PDH-Multiplex, power supply, battery pack as well as the presentations where customers can scan their lines. With regard to security, the cabinets are closed at the front and rear and are controlled via door contacts. At the back a shortend rear door ensures a safty seal. The customer has only free access to the front side.
In consideration to the power supply on the customer's side, Schroff has developed a new concept for Colt Telecom for the high demands on the systems availability. The Power System 1000 faciliates not only a redundant operation but also stable operation readiness thanks to a controlled battery module. The system output power is freely combinable with small 100W-modules, therefore it is individually adaptable to specific requirements; expansive over-dimensions are unnecessary.
